Valentine's Day Dating Lessons from a Life Coach

There’s so much pressure out there to have a date on Valentine's Day. I’m sure you are getting bombarded with ads and content on social media and popular dating sites. Our Instagram feeds are blowing up with ads for jewelry, lingerie and finding a perfect match from several dating websites.

On Valentine's Day we’ll see couples posting pics with their Valentine and professing their love for one another.

And here you are, alone once again. No Valentine for you.

Hey, it’s okay. According to entrepreneur.com, “Half of the American population identifies as single”. It’s not just YOU!

When we think about Valentine's Day, we automatically think of couples in romantic relationships.

Well, it’s time to think outside the dating box.

Focus Your Valentine's Day Energy

How many LOVE relationships do you have? We have many types of loving relationships in our lives. Focus your Valentine’s Day energy on one (or several) of those relationships. Start with your family and friends.

How about your parents? When was the last time you made them dinner?

What about your siblings? I don’t live anywhere near my brother, but this year I’ll be sending him flowers to let him know how much I love and miss him!

Do you have kids? Kids LOVE Valentine’s Day! Plan a special meal to make at home together and make handmade Valentines for one another. It’s a special way to bond with them.

Don’t have kids? How about your nieces and nephews? They would love that special time with their aunt and uncle!

Speaking of kids, remember handing out all of those Valentine’s as a kid in school? Buy a package and hand them out to family and friends. It’s fun and silly and something everyone will enjoy.

Have Fun and Be Creative

One year for Valentine’s Day, a friend of mine and I went out to the bars. For fun we decided to buy a couple of bags of Hershey Kisses and hand them out. It was a great way to meet new people too!

Do you love dancing? Where I live there is a weekly swing dance event that offers a free class at the beginning of the evening. What a great way to get out and burn some extra calories while meeting new people.

Last year for my birthday I went Go-Karting at an indoor race track. It was so much fun! What a great place to channel your inner race-car driver and do some laps on Valentine’s Day.

Connect With New People

Still flying solo on Valentine's Day? It’s okay. There are lots of singles out there in the same situation. You can search for public events on Facebook and also on Meetup.com. I personally have embraced the social groups on Meetup.com. It’s a great platform to meet new people and socialize.

Celebrate the Amazing You

Not ready to mix and mingle? That’s okay too! What is something you LOVE to do? We all need to love ourselves FIRST, so why not celebrate the AMAZING YOU that you are and do something you LOVE doing? Take a yoga class, order your favorite take-out, watch a favorite movie or even find a new movie to watch. Your choices are ENDLESS!

For me personally, I have found the best way to get through Valentine's day is to have a great network of friends. In the last couple of years I’ve cultivated many friendships and I now have an incredible network of friends to celebrate with. These are the women and men I’ll be spending Valentine’s Day with this year. I mean, Valentine’s Day is about LOVE.

All kinds of LOVE!
