Romeo, Romeo Wherefore Art Thou Romeo? It's Valentine’s Day!

Updated: Feb 14

It happens every year. And on the same day every year. February 14 Valentine’s Day.

Here you are. Once again, without a date. There’s no one sending you flowers, there’s no one planning a romantic evening with you. There’s just  - no one.

First date ideas

You know what? It’s completely okay. It’s okay to be alone. It’s not what society is telling us to do, but it’s what the universe is giving to you right now. There’s a reason for it; you just need to figure out what it is.

I personally don’t get all wrapped up in the hype of Valentine’s Day. There was a time that I did. My husband would send me flowers, and there was one time where I planned a dinner at home with another couple we knew. I mean, that’s what Valentine’s Day is all about, right? Celebrating your loved one…

Well, all of you single people out there, and actually the married and people in significant relationships too, here’s what I’m about to offer up...

Celebrate Yourself on Valentine's Day

How about celebrating YOURSELF on Valentine’s Day? I think it’s a great idea! Who else in your life is more important than you? Who is the one person that’s responsible for taking care of you? You got it – it’s you!

There is a time where I would sit home nearly in tears, because I was so upset I didn’t have a partner. Okay maybe I wasn’t in tears but I can tell you I was definitely bitter on some level. It wasn’t a healthy place for me to be.

You can sit there and look at Valentine’s Day as just another day. And you know what, it is. This year, I think I’m going to do something different. This year I’m going to celebrate me! I mean, I know the amazing things I’ve done in my life. I know the progress I’ve made working on myself. Why not reward myself and remind myself that I do love me?

This year I had an unexpected twist for Valentine's Day. I’m going on a CRUISE! The opportunity became available and I jumped on it! I have a friend who calls herself a “YNOT Girl”. I mean, why not take advantage of the opportunities the universe puts in front of you? That’s what I’m doing!

So in addition to sunning myself (note to self: BRING LOTS OF SUNSCREEN!), and socializing on the cruise, I may schedule a massage or a manicure or something else to treat myself. Hey, no one else is going to do it. It’s more important that I express my undying love to the most important person in my life - ME!

One year for Valentine's Day I went out with a girlfriend of mine and we handed out kisses. WHAT?! That’s right, we handed out Hershey Kisses to strangers. It was a great ice breaker to get to know people! You know I’m doing it again this year. I’ve already packed them in my suitcase!

I’m hopeful the cruise will have some sort of mixer for singles. They do offer a single’s happy hour each night, but I can’t tell if anything is Valentine’s Day themed. I’ll find out and report back!

Just because I don’t have a Valentine’s Day date this year, doesn’t mean I won’t have one next year. I will still keep working on me. As long as I continue to do that, dating will be so much easier. I’ll continue to set healthy boundaries, flirt without fear of rejection, and continue to put my best foot forward. That’s when I’ll meet the man who is right for me.
